Abstract
This introduction chapter provides a quick background into water-related extremes and water issues in California followed by current urban planning efforts and mechanisms used to combat negative impacts of these events and maintain a resilient water system. The purpose of this chapter is primarily educational and aims to guide readers who are not familiar with California’s complex water system and the wide variety of extreme events the state is exposed to and has historically and currently continues to deal with including drought, flooding, sea level rise, and storm surge. The chapter provides insight at a basic level for readers to understand some of the water-related planning documents and efforts the state uses to manage this precious resource and current efforts in integrating resilience into urban planning for water resources and extreme events.
