Abstract

In the second edition of Implanting Strategic Management, Ansoff and McDonnell introduced this chapter with a quote from Machiavelli. In his famous book The Prince, Machiavelli said: ‘There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain of success than to take a lead in the introduction of a new order of things, because the innovation has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under new.’ They recognized this prophetic statement as capturing the essence of one major source of resistance to strategic discontinuities. This chapter will examine the nature of the ‘order of things’ and offer suggestions for managing it.
