Plant Parasitic Nematodes in Sustainable Agriculture of North America

Part of the book series: Sustainability in Plant and Crop Protection ((SUPP))

Abstract

Traditionally, like much of the South, the Carolinas have been agricultural. From the towering Appalachian Mountains to the Coastal Plain, its climate and landscapes allow for a variety of agricultural crops including tobacco, sweet potatoes cotton, soybeans, peanuts, cotton, corn, wheat, nursery, fruit trees and more. Plant parasitic nematodes are pests of agricultural crops and cause considerable economic losses. However, due to its small microscopic size, we are often unaware of losses caused by nematodes and may attribute to other causes. This review documented all the plant parasitic nematode species in total of 105 species occurred in North Carolina and South Carolina so far and elaborated the major damaging nematode species including root knot, soybean cyst, reniform, sting, lesion, lance, stubby root, tobacco cyst, ring, foliar, and stem and bulb nematodes as a guidance for future nematode research and management.
