Abstract

The interaction between pain patients and their family members can be described via a systems theory model for chronic pain, where family members can encourage or discourage pain behaviors through operant conditioning. Family-centered interventions for chronic pain can result in improved treatment outcomes, although essential characteristics of interventions are not clear.
