Abstract

Hypothyroidism is the deficiency of thyroid hormone due to either decreased secretion from the thyroid gland (primary hypothyroidism) or ineffective stimulation from the pituitary or hypothalamus (secondary hypothyroidism). The most common cause is autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland, known as Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism affects all systems in the body; however, there are no specific signs or symptoms. The probability of the diagnosis increases with the number of features present. Thyroid function can be assessed by checking thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (T4) levels. Various non-thyroidal conditions can affect the levels, however, and care should be taken to account for these before labelling the patient as hypothyroid. The mainstay of treatment is levothyroxine, which is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States.
