Abstract
This chapter concerns the practice of cultural governance in Australia and presents recent developments in the sector. The chapter begins with a broad overview of the country and cultural sector to provide a context for the discussion. The following section discusses the strengths and challenges facing the cultural sector as well as their impacts. Discussion then moves on to the concept and shape of cultural governance in Australia with reference to the private sector and the broader nonprofit sector. It is argued that the sector’s governance structures and processes are aligning with those of the for-profit sector. The five principles and how they manifest in the Australian sector are then considered in detail before moving on to current trends in the sector. The chapter continues by illustrating the five measurable cultural outcomes developed by the Cultural Development Network in Australia. Consideration is given to how the adoption of cultural outcomes allows for improved planning and the evaluation of cultural activity, and the implications of this for governance.
