Abstract

Vacharoglou examines changes in the teaching of the First World War in secondary history textbooks and curricula in Greece between 1960 and 2010. Tracing developments in state curricula through the period, Vachoroglou charts the shifting objectives of history education. Through an analysis of the content of textbooks on the First World War, he identifies and examines a shift from a national to a European and global perspective. In so doing, he offers an assessment of the changing nature and purpose of the history education in contemporary Greece.
