The Representation of War and Peace Under the Government of King Leopold I (1831–65) in Belgian Textbooks for National History for Secondary Education (1910–60)

Abstract

Van Wiele analyses how Belgian authors of textbooks for national history between 1910 and 1960 affirmed and legitimated the way that the young Belgian nation had waged war to safeguard its independence during the reign of Leopold I. Using the sensitizing concepts deployed by Marc Ferro, Van Wiele investigates the extent to which Belgian textbook authors wrote history from a nationalist perspective to educate students to become patriotic citizens. Drawing on Benedict Anderson’s description of the nation as an imagined community, Van Wiele assesses the degree to which history and nationalist imagination are combined in the textbooks. By comparing textbooks with academic historiography, Van Wiele explores how the textbook authors produced nationalist readings of historiography and contributed to the creation of national identity in students.
