Abstract
The new face of globalisation will require more commitment from national leaders so that their countries can derive the expected benefits of globalisation. This makes it mandatory for national leaders to have external/growth mind-set. It is this type of leadership mind-set that can lead nations to build the comparative advantage they require to compete effectively. Africa is in her current underdeveloped condition because of the autocratic and transactional leadership styles of her leaders. Hence, value-based leadership styles are recommended for African leaders because of the interest in citizens’ well-being and development exhibited by these leadership styles. The few times Africa experienced the bright side of leadership characterised by development, the leaders utilised value-based leadership styles.
