Cultivating Students’ Diverse Abilities Through Arts Education: Emergence of the STEAM Perspective

Abstract

STEM has played a crucial role in promoting innovation and national competitiveness, while STEAM-learning, integrated arts with STEM, represents a new direction of education in the twenty-first century. This chapter identifies the STEAM research and Arts Education movement in China. An analysis of the methodology used in the visual arts teaching in a primary school exposes some changes of Arts Education in recent years. It can be summarized as follows: the teaching ideal and methodology has moved from focusing on skill mastery to the cultivation of comprehensive abilities; results are no longer considered as important as facilitating a learning-based approach; visual arts are no longer regarded as merely a single discipline. While maintaining the function of its own discipline, the Arts Education also has interdisciplinary features. This kind of Arts Education can develop the students’ abilities, such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and communication. And all of these can enhance and deepen the STEM fields study.
