Abstract

Child and adolescent anxiety disorders have high prevalence and comorbidity rates and are associated with impairments across multiple domains. In particular, childhood anxiety can have detrimental effects on school functioning, leading to adverse academic and social outcomes. In this chapter, we provide a brief review of youth anxiety disorders and their effect on school functioning as well as screening methods for anxiety within schools, illustrated by a case example. We then discuss efficacious outpatient treatments for children and adolescents with moderate to severe anxiety disorders as well as decision points for referring youth to outpatient therapy and/or medication evaluation. The chapter concludes with information on school-based interventions for youth anxiety disorders.
