Abstract
Linear elements of the transport network may be characterised using numerous factors, including flow capacity, average or permissible running speed, availability to individual means of transport etc. One of the factors that describe the chosen road section is also quality. Quality translates not only into travelling comfort, but also into the negative impact exerted by transport on the environment. Hence the importance of ongoing road quality monitoring. Having up-to-date knowledge in this respect, not only is it possible to plan repairs more effectively, but one can also transfer vehicle streams to routes of higher quality in order to minimise the negative environmental impact of transport (through noise, vibration etc.). This article provides a proposal to use the S-mileSys tool to diagnose technical condition of roads using a fleet of vehicles involved in municipal waste collection. Another stage of the concept implementation is to choose specific vehicles with regard to individual waste collection routes in the transport network in respect of the road quality criterion. What has also been provided in the paper is a case study comprising a small town and a discussion on the potential effect of such efforts as those in question on the given area’s transport network. The method proposed in the article may also be applied in another area.
