Radiology in Global Health

Abstract

This chapter describes the impetus and process of project design for improving radiology services as part of global health development projects. The “radiology divide” between locations with high resources and locations with low resources contributes to disparities in healthcare access, availability, and quality. Designing programs and projects to ameliorate these disparities requires a stepwise, evidence-based approach. The 16-part Radiology Readiness™ approach developed by RAD-AID International is one such approach. The Radiology Readiness™ approach emphasizes the importance of relationship-building, background research, data collection and analysis, development of goals and objectives, and continuous reassessment during project execution. By using this approach, RAD-AID has had success developing sustainable radiology-related health development projects in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
