Abstract

This chapter is concerned with some of the connections between intellectual disability and sleep disturbance, both of which feature prominently in neurodevelopmental disorders. The definition of intellectual disability and relevant terminological issues are discussed, followed by aetiological issues. Present-day concepts and types of sleep disturbance, as well as the psychological and medical consequences of disturbed sleep, are then outlined. Connections between intellectual disability and sleep disturbance are reviewed together with other possible influences (including comorbidities) in the aetiology of the sleep disturbance. The range of disabilities known as foetal alcohol spectrum disorders is taken as an example of this potential multifactorial causation. Finally, aspects of the assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance in children with intellectual disability are considered.
