Abstract

The traditional time-based model of surgical education can lead to uneven skill development among training surgical residents. With the current demands of surgical education, outcome-based training along with simulation provides an opportunity to fill in the gaps that the traditional model of training fails to address. Outcome-based training on simulators can lead to superior and uniform skill acquisition by trainees. This chapter describes the outcome-based training through the lens of the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition, explores the evidence behind outcome-based training paradigms, and addresses the challenges yet to be overcome.
