Abstract
People tend to make poor decisions under stress, in ways inconsistent with traditional economics. Why? A new subfield of research, called behavioural economics, has great relevance for the conflict studies community. Issues such as insecurity, gatekeeper perceptions, and costly information, however, make conducting such research difficult and prone to biases in favour of more urban and stable areas. This chapter makes the argument that nonetheless, such research can and should be attempted.
