Caroline’s Adventures

  • Jason Thompson
Part of the Queenship and Power book series (QAP)

Caroline also fell in love with Italy. After leaving Naples in 1814 she continued her tour of Italy, taking in the sights at a prodigious pace, reporting everything in her breathless letters to Gell. Before settling in Italy she obtained a warship from the Admiralty for a jaunt around the Mediterranean that took her to such places as the seraglio of the Bey of Tunis and dangerous places in Syria. She entered Jerusalem mounted on a donkey. Returning to Italy she found herself still harassed by her estranged husband who was now the Prince Regent. She found her abode in Pesaro on the Adriatic side of the Italian Peninsula where the British government fervently hoped she would remain until the end of her days.
