Abstract

Gladstone’s remarkable rise to fame in the United States began as an unlikely story. Peterson explores the reasons for his improbable reputation in the United States after he had contributed to strained relations between Great Britain and the Union during the Civil War. The chapter then provides an overview of Gladstone’s political ideology and his theological evolution from Evangelical to High Church Anglican. The central tenets of Gladstonian Liberalism are delineated along with the evolution of his views on church/state relations. His motives and approach to Christian apologetics are also spelled out. Peterson then explains the research methodology for the book and provides a list of the primary source periodicals consulted in the study. Finally, he provides a brief overview of Gladstonian historiography as it relates to the study of Gladstone and America.
