Abstract
Development of the human hematopoietic system begins early in the embryo. Several factors make the neonatal and fetal hematopoietic system unique and adaptable to extrauterine life. In infancy and childhood, there are age-appropriate reference ranges for hemoglobin (Hb), WBC, and coagulation parameters. There are several unique disorders commonly seen in the neonate such as hemolytic disease of the newborn, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, and various autoimmune cytopenias.
