Abstract
Onurkan-Samani explores historical/political implications of a British colonial institution, the Legislative Council (1882–1931) in Cyprus. Upon evaluating original minutes of the Legislative Council, Onurkan-Samani sheds light on certain socioeconomic and political matters of the time. Following discussions taken place between “Muslim” (Turkish Cypriot) and “non-Muslim” (Orthodox Greek Cypriot) local members, together with appointed British officials of the Council, Onurkan-Samani, examines the process of transformation from traditional to modern socio-political structure, and from a religious identity to national identity in Cyprus. The chapter also focuses on the role of the Council on the modernization dynamics and the configuration of the political culture and institutions of the island communities questioning the role of nationalism and colonial policies in minimizing the areas of cooperation among the political elites.
