Abstract
The chapter is devoted to the exploration and analysis of the process of formation and specifics of national ideologies in the new independent states of post-Soviet Central Asia. Special attention is given to the ideological roots of national ideas developed and promoted by local political and intellectual elites. The author considers the issue through the lenses of main conceptual approaches—primordialism, modernism and ethno-symbolism as well as their practical application in the conditions of modern Central Asia. Today, the process of formation of national ideologies is excessively dominated by the state; the author argues that the process of formation of national ideologies in the region is not completed and still underway.
