Abstract
The film Out of the Blue (2006) details the events of the November 1990 shootings of thirteen adults and children in the tiny village of Aramoana, 25 kilometres outside Dunedin, a city in the South Island of New Zealand. Part I introduces the adaptive procedures Robert Sarkies (director/co-writer) and Graham Tetley (co-writer) went through in re-shaping the events for their screenplay, thereby changing the tone of the film. Part II details the community’s involvement with the adaptation and filmmaking processes, while Part III looks at the role of the national censor, in consultation with the community, in deciding on a rating for Out of the Blue. In Part IV, I use this collaborative consultation to extend Linda Hutcheon’s argument regarding the indigenization of specific adaptations.
