Complications of Chronic Kidney Disease in Adolescents

  • Chapter

Abstract

There is a paucity of literature focused exclusively on adolescent-aged children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Most of the evidence available is derived from studies encompassing the entire span of childhood and adolescence. Adolescence is a unique developmental period associated with adverse outcomes in CKD – patients are subject to multifactorial stressors stemming from developmental and physiologic changes, medical complications, and psychosocial changes. As such, it is vital for caregivers to take into account these developmental changes to ensure optimal long-term health and quality of life for adolescents with CKD.
