Pathology of the Placenta

Abstract

The microscopic appearance of the placental parenchyma should under normal circumstances be appropriate to the stage of gestation, reflecting the balance of growth and differentiation that enables fetal requirements to be met. Abnormalities of parenchymal development may result in patterns that are described as either accelerated or delayed for gestation. This chapter discusses these appearances and their associations and emphasizes the clinical relevance of recognition of maturation abnormalities.
