Abstract
Wars matter also in peace time. To better understand the characteristics of war and its impact, it is most revealing to analyse the historicity of modern warfare rather than assuming a war culture as an anthropological constant. If one looks back on the past two centuries – that were also marked by longer periods of peace – a structural change in war can be identified in several problem areas: the tendency towards “total war”, the idea of humanitarian interventions, technological and cultural changes, the nationalisation of war, the invention of conscription, as well as the role of civilians. Modern military history with its interest also in political, social, and cultural aspects of the past, has shed new light on war and post-war from the late eighteenth century to the present.
