Abstract

Chapter 4 deals with land, a most important parameter of spatial change and a key element of regional planning. The purpose of the chapter is to demonstrate how actions in past historical periods, from ancient Mesopotamia to the Modern Era focused on the transformation of rural or waste land and how they contributed to the production of a new geographical landscape. Such changes came about as a result of clearing forests, bringing land under the plough, reforming tenancy and ownership rights, introducing innovations or building infrastructures, e.g. for water control. The first section focuses on the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, while the second extends our interest to the Middle Ages, e.g. to the feudal economy, and the Modern Era, including agrarian reform and land distribution. Particular issues include land surveys, the formation of large estates and the opening of new lands to settlers.
