Abstract
Tapping several archival sources, this chapter analyzes how Jonas E. Salk gradually expanded his experiments to thousands of children enrolled in the Pittsburgh public schools. This led to the national trial involving 1.8 million young school students. The roles of school personnel and parents are also highlighted. Finally, this chapter examines field problems, including stealth injections and security issues, that may have compromised the validity of this enterprise.
