Abstract
In 1939, Heisenberg, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Karl-Friedrich Bonhoeffer come separately to the USA for different reasons: Heisenberg to lecture; and Dietrich and Karl-Friedrich to consider job offers. Major discussions take place everywhere they go on science and politics as the threat of war increases. In August, Szilard and Einstein send a letter to President Roosevelt on the prospect of an atomic bomb, which leads to the Manhattan Project. Dietrich and Karl-Friedrich turn down the job offers. All three men returned to Germany: the Bonhoeffers, to help bring about Germany’s defeat; and Heisenberg, to help Germany win.
