Abstract
Those who are to teach mathematics at primary level are not always positive about the subject and so risk perpetuating their angst with their pupils. Learning about teaching through play that put the learner at the centre supports readjustment of attitude, even to the point of evangelistic positivity! We want pupils to thrive within mathematics, not be outside whilst mathematics teaching is ‘done to them’—knowledge is not passively received but is actively built through participation. Therefore, as teachers of teachers, we need to adopt the same principles for our students. Modelling social constructivism through playing with Lego® or Meccano® works.
