Abstract
McCool explains how the anti-institutionalist politics of authenticity was a staple of the left and for much of the twentieth century, especially in the 1960s. He provides a solid, clear background of the ideology of Burkean conservatism and how and why it reacted to the left’s identity politics and seeming utopianism. McCool then discusses the ways in which the populist right in recent years has co-opted the rhetoric and attitudes about institutions that those on the left expressed in the 1960s. The chapter concludes with concern that, given Trumpism and the populist conservative movement, we need to pay more attention to the way authenticity mixes with politics today than ever before.
