Abstract

This chapter has explored the use of variable packet payload sizes as an alternative to the already existing methods to sustain VoIP calls under congested network scenarios. OPNET Modeler 14.5.A has been used for carrying out extensive analysis for voice quality in terms of MOS and end-to-end delays. An algorithm has been proposed that utilizes the RTCP receiver reports to assess the network condition and select the optimum packet payload size. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in OPNET 14.5.A and exhaustive simulations have been undertaken to test its efficiency. The algorithm has provided satisfactory results while maintaining its transparency with respect to the end user.
