Abstract

This chapter traces the various links between Australia and the Felix the Cat character. It provides an assessment of the Australian animator, Pat Sullivan’s work in the animation industry in New York. A number of plausible arguments are presented to show that both Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer (as well as many of the other talented animators at the Sullivan studio) probably played a more balanced role in the Felix the Cat enterprise. Felix the Cat’s transition into synchronised-sound films is detailed, as well as previously unpublished information surrounding the production of the 1950s Felix the Cat television series.
