Abstract
The discovery of the remains of an 1852 bridge over the Salado River (Argentina), which for centuries had divided the lands of the white colonizers from those of the native inhabitants, provided the opportunity to study the work of Edward Taylor, engineer-architect. In a methodological exercise in historical archaeology, architectural history, and documentary history, it was possible to comprehend the work of a man who had to deal with the conflict between the local material possibilities that were available for building, and his expectations which were based on the Industrial Revolution ideals. It is the work of a British engineer immersed in the local conservative and traditional reality of a country far from the region where the Industrial Revolution first developed.
