Abstract

The Hungarian hotel industry has changed considerably over the last few years. It has been transformed thoroughly, until finally reaching its current status. This sector was not only affected by recession, financing problems and the frequent change of ownership or management, but by also changes in legislation and classification system, which in turn have caused problems to its current management. The meaning of the ‘stars’ has been slightly changed by the introduction and proliferation of the Hotelstars Union’s classification system. The operation of hotels has also become strictly framed. In addition, there are hotels which try to promote their high standards by branding, instead of classifying themselves. Does the basis of sustainability, its social and environmental aspects really depend on the ‘stars’? Does the Hotelstars Union’s classification system effectively regulate ethical hotel operations? Is there any connection between responsible corporate management and the application of the classification system? Besides answering these questions, in this study the author intends to examine the background, the causes and the actions taken by Hungarian hotels to support sustainability, which are outlining the long-term responsibilities of the hotel industry.
