Abstract

This article briefly describes the evolution of research on lower ionospheric variabilities using VLF/LF radio wave propagation techniques in Indian scenario. We first emphasize on the importance of propagation characteristics and modulation techniques of the LF/ELF wave propagation through Earth-ionosphere waveguide. Next we present the scientific efforts made in India for the radio wave research. Finally, we describe the utility and application of this subject to understand the lower ionospheric irregularities.

Acknowledgements

I would express my very profound gratitude to Professor Sandip Kumar Chakrabarti without whom this subject could not have been developed in Kolkata. He was my PhD thesis supervisor, my present mentor and always my inspiration as ‘SIR’ to put myself in my scientific research area. I thank all my ionospheric research group members for building such a nice team to work as a family. I thank all the funding agencies during my entire research and working tenure to provide me supports to sustain my research. Finally I thank Dr. Banibrata Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Tamal Basak and Dr. Suman Chakraborty for the editorial supports. I dedicate this article to my father whom I lost few months ago.
