Abstract

This chapter explores the definitions of new roles and identities in relation to one’s place on the road and in the automobile. Members of European automobile clubs and newly formed associations of Vietnamese drivers entered competitive and collaborative relationships, the latter circulating car narratives to cut through the racial divide, threatening socio-racial and symbolic hierarchies on which stood the prestige of the former. In order to facilitate the movement of a variety of people and goods on colonial roads, the automobile encouraged the public expression of all its users, thus opening new cultural conduits and the circulation of modern ideas. This chapter focuses on the figure of Duclaux, a French transporter, avid motorist and key actor in the commercial and legal system of automobility in Northern Indochina.
