Abstract
Since the beginnings of medicine, opioids have been a cornerstone in the treatment of surgical pain. Novel formulations and routes of delivery have been implemented with the aim of reducing the incidence of opioid-side effects and improve patients’ long-term outcome. With this purpose in mind, multimodal analgesia protocols including opioid-sparing strategies are key elements of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs for patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
