Abstract
West Nile virus appeared in the Americas for the first time in 1999 and spread rapidly in the following years. Although an acute infection, it was found to be transfusion-transmissible in 2002, and donor testing for WNV RNA was initiated throughout the United States by the summer of 2003. Testing in minipools was not adequately sensitive, and mechanisms were developed for rapid implementation of individual donation testing in times and areas of high incidence of human infection. Overall, the response has been very effective and may offer lessons for managing future outbreaks of acute, transfusion-transmissible infections.
