Abstract

Apart from supporting the economic development of the country, banks can also have an influence—positive or negative—the national and international levels. Banks make up the main portion of the financial system in India. The history, composition and functioning of the banking sector in India is summarised in this chapter in order to understand the role of psychological empowerment on job satisfaction and job-related stress in the service sector with a focus on banks. The emerging scenario of banking in India under the shadow of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation is given; the authors have tried to reflect a true picture of the Indian banking system describing the various types of banks. Although research on psychological empowerment in the banking sector is relatively limited, we present summaries of relevant, significant research works in this area.
