Migration in Swiss Broadcasting (1960s–1970s): Players, Policies, Representations

Abstract

The chapter explores which aspects and representations Swiss Broadcasting during the 1960s and the 1970s uses when it comes to two different migrant groups: national migrants (emigrants) and foreign migrants (immigrants). What are the main differences and their causes? Are there any common elements, any ‘idealistic social aspects’ (Baczko 1984) about immigration that exist in both categories? Considering radio and television simultaneously allow more efficient analysis of the specific aspects of each type of media in their role as public service providers for minority populations. The chapter does not have the objective to reach wide-ranging, generalised conclusions, but instead intends to be an explorative study to verify if expanding analysis of immigration in a comprehensive way, including forms of immigration and emigration to and from one country for a given period, opens new perspectives on the representation of the phenomenon.
