Abstract

Although human migration is hardly a new phenomenon, its nature and extent have changed significantly in the postindustrial era (Aas & Bosworth in The borders of punishment: Migration, citizenship, and social exclusion, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2013; Maly et al. in Superdiversiteit en democratie, EPO, Berchem, 2014). Alongside the ‘traditional’ migration movements (such as labour migrations, migrations from former colonies, etc.), so-called ‘new migrations’ became prominent (Koser & Lutz in The new migration in Europe: Social constructions and realities, MacMillan, London, pp. 1–17, 1998).
