Abstract

This chapter investigates the concept of emotions and their study from various perspectives. Based on the motion that scholars, especially students, have a tendency to see some emotions as negative, the chapter explores the importance of seeing all emotions as valid, relevant and necessary. Following this, the need to develop emotional literacy and labelling emotions, whilst accounting for individuality, to further develop socio-emotional intelligence are discussed. The role that emotions have in helping people connect with others and the importance of managing them and expressing them in a healthy manner are discussed with reference to important ideas such as positive psychology and humanism. The chapter then provides a definition of emotions based on the premise that they are individually expressed, but culturally and socially constructed.
