Abstract

In the current chapter on Nikos Kazantzakis’s understanding of human nature, Gill follows how this theme unfolds in the novel Fratricides. Gill fleshes out a recurring theme of conflict in Kazantzakis’s writings, this time the drama between those Greeks who have chosen to fight against their traditional cultural and religion in the name of Communism and those who seek to remain true to these traditions. The central role is played by the local priest, Father Yanaros, who unsuccessfully seeks some sort of compromise.
