Abstract
Gill explores Kazantzakis’s understanding of the nature of God by tracing how the Cretan wrote about Jesus Christ in the novel The Last Temptation of Christ. This chapter, like the novel, follows the Gospel story of Jesus’ life in an effort to highlight the interactions between Christ’s human and divine natures. The focus is on how the former seeks to “transubstantiate” itself into the latter. Gill shows how the notions of self-sacrifice and striving for the transcendent are central for Kazantzakis’s understanding of the nature of God.
