Abstract

In the opening chapter to his insightful book on Nikos Kazantzakis’s philosophical and theological thought, Jerry H. Gill traces the life of the most famous Cretan writer from childhood on the island of Crete, through excursions around Greece, his studies in Paris and trips to Russia, to his marriage with Eleni/Helen and their survival of World War TwoWW II, to his final travels to China and death in 1957. This sets the stage for the in depth study in the remainder of the book in which Gill follows three strands of nature, human nature, and the nature of God as revealed in Kazantzakis’s major novels and other writings, Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, The Fratricides, Saviors of God and Freedom or Death.
