Abstract

Obesity is a rapidly expanding epidemic worldwide, particularly in Western countries. As the prevalence of obesity is increasing, a heavy burden is being rested on societies and healthcare systems manifested by a phenomenal growing rate of obesity-related morbidities and mortalities.

In the past few decades, an increasing body of evidence has been accumulating to confirm the strong ties between obesity and the increasing occurrence of certain malignancies on one end or the emergence of aggressive phenotypes on the other.

In this chapter, we aim to explore the molecular dysregulations that arise as the obese body builds up excessive amounts of adipose tissue and summarize the biologic processes that connect two common, challenging, and influential diseases in our contemporary surgical practice, obesity and cancer.
