Abstract

This chapter focuses on the major eating disorders – anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). The other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED) including purging disorder (PD) and night eating syndrome (NES) will be briefly reviewed. An introduction to a range of proposed ED [loss of control eating, orthorexia nervosa, anorexia athletica, relative energy deficiency in sport, diabulimia] is included. The multifactorial causality of ED is explored including psychological, genetic, neurobiological, and sociocultural factors. The prevention of eating disorders is explored. Detailed screening, assessment, and initial treatment planning recommendations for youth with ED are provided with a case example.
