Abstract

Tics of various types are frequently reported in young children. These behaviors are repetitive responses typically described as sudden, rapid, and purposeless vocalizations or motor movements which are generally exacerbated when the person is anxious. Defining characteristics of tics include frequency, duration, severity, complexity, location, and whether they occur in isolation or multiply occur. These behaviors, which are reviewed in this chapter, can be physical behaviors such as eye blinking or verbal behaviors or both. Additionally, tics are commonly associated with other psychopathology including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. A number of assessment methods designed to assess the presence, type, severity, and complexity of tics have also been developed and are described here. At present, there are a number of rating scales, semi-structured interviews, and screening instruments designed to assess the presence and characteristics of tics and tic disorders, all with varying levels of psychometric support and demonstrated use in the literature. This chapter discusses and reviews these assessment methods.
