Abstract

The X-Files and Touched by an Angel offer a solution for the culture wars schism between traditionalists and progressivists, negotiating a culture peace through a synthesis of science and religion, reason and faith. Each show addresses the postmodern question, what is truth? Weaving in other examples from nineties popular culture, like the radio show, Coast to Coast AM, and the Fox special, Alien Autopsy , this chapter demonstrates how these shows rise above contemporary doubt, giving reason to believe in real and active supernatural beings on earth. These shows suggest such beings have been among us as long as humans have existed. And they are in control.
