Abstract

Performance of a comprehensive neonatal examination in the first few days of life is extremely important and useful in identifying risk factors, developing a management plan, and thus decreasing neonatal deaths. It is helpful in identifying illness or any life-threatening congenital malformations or disorders which may require immediate attention; assessment of gestational age, vigor, and nutritional status are critical to assessing infant’s health. A good examination will provide required information to the health provider, and it also can be reassuring to the parents. Furthermore, it is considered a good opportunity for health promotion. This chapter will help you to perform a neonatal examination in a professional and comprehensive, yet concise, manner.

There is nothing like a newborn baby to renew your spirit–and to buttress your resolve to make the world a better place.
